Do you have ongoing, physical symptoms, which standard, conventional medical approaches have not resolved? |
Do you experience chronic, ongoing physical symptoms which are not improving with conventional medical treatment? Do you feel unheard and unsupported when it comes to the impact this has on your physical and mental wellbeing? Do you want to feel empowered to make lasting changes, to have more energy, feel better and be able to live the life you desire? Are you motivated and keen to make changes but have no idea where to start? |
LET ME HELP YOUTrue understanding of the mind/body connection has yet to permeate the way in which we approach medicine, parenting or society. As doctors we default to writing prescriptions and treating the symptoms rather than the root cause. As parents we train our children to suppress their feelings and emotions in ways that lead to real physical symptoms. And as a society we reward a ‘push on through’ mentality and praise those who ‘never complain’ – training ourselves to accommodate our health ‘niggles’ until they become too painful to ignore. The NHS is overwhelmed; resources are tight and frontline approaches have yet to catch up with the latest thinking on the link between physical, mental, and emotional health. In the current system, doctors are encouraged to do fast consultations, exploring one issue at a time, looking for a quick fix so that they can move on to the next patient. This approach works well for acute problems and the NHS cannot be beaten when it comes to urgent care. But it leaves little room for a holistic approach to symptoms and dis’ease’, and little time for exploring the root causes of unwellness. Sadly, if you’re experiencing ongoing, vague symptoms this model is unlikely to work for you. Healing and true wellbeing are possible for everyone but it must work at every level: not just simply physical, but psychological and emotional too. Unfortunately, we consistently under-estimated the impact of stress, life events and psychological trauma on physical and emotional health. By using a properly informed, holistic approach to treatment, we can get to the root cause of the issues and start to alleviate physical and mental health issues that are resistant to a more traditional approach. I work with a holistic treatment approach, integrating 20 years of clinical practice together with personal and academic understanding of psychological trauma and using a lifestyle and functional medicine perspective, to empower and treat working age adults. There is a wealth of scientific evidence to support this approach but – most important for you - it actually works. Together, we can understand what is causing your symptoms and co-create a transformational health plan tailored to your needs, going at your pace, to empower you to live the life you desire. ABOUT SUSANNA
One grey, cold winter morning in January 2016, I got to work and started the early morning GP session. By 9am, I found myself in a snotty, sobbing heap, in the corner of my consultation room, lights all turned off, trying to make myself invisible, when my colleague found me.
I was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and it was nearly six months before I could work again. Despite always having a particular interest in mental health and the overlap with physical symptoms, nothing in my training prepared me for what I experienced while I was unwell. To try to understand what was happening to me, I enrolled in a Masters of Psychological Trauma. |
This was like putting on a pair of glasses and being able to see clearly for the first time: suddenly, I could see the links between psychological trauma and medical symptoms; I could see the impact of stress on communication and behaviour as well as how it manifests in the body, both in patients and healthcare professional colleagues around me. As I delved further into this topic, I found a wealth of research and evidence for lifestyle medicine and functional medicine approaches successfully treating these conditions.
I was hooked and made it my mission to share my knowledge and understanding with as many patients and healthcare professional colleagues as possible.

My Mission
Imagine a world in which the link between physical, mental and emotional health is properly understood; where the profound impact of stress, life events and psychological trauma is fully recognised and where a completely integrated approach – informed by this understanding – can help all those who feel broken to heal; to live fully expressed lives and to fulfil their true potential.
My purpose is to help people just like you who have suffered for far too long from physical ailments that traditional, conventional medical approaches have not resolved: people with aches and pains and unexplained symptoms who know that there is something wrong but feel unheard and unsupported in their quest to get well.

My purpose is to help people just like you who have suffered for far too long from physical ailments that traditional, conventional medical approaches have not resolved: people with aches and pains and unexplained symptoms who know that there is something wrong but feel unheard and unsupported in their quest to get well.
My approach combines my 20+ years of clinical medical experience with both academic and personal knowledge of stress and psychological trauma, together with training in lifestyle medicine and functional medicine, to empower patients to make lasting changes to improve their health and wellbeing.
In addition to my private work, I divide my time as a GP between a busy A&E department and an NHS Urgent Treatment Centre. I also teach at a Medical School, both undergraduate and postgraduate and have given many lectures and seminars on the impact of psychological trauma and burnout on healthcare professionals, communication within the workplace and teaching.
I am a founding member of First You, a group of Healthcare Professionals looking to promote mental wellbeing within Healthcare Colleagues: www.firstyou.org.
My Qualifications
I studied medicine at University College London, graduating in 1999 and completing my GP training in London and gaining Membership Royal College General Practitioners (MRCGP) in 2005. I worked in Sydney, Australia for five years, both as a GP and as a lecturer at the University of New South Wales. On returning to the UK I continued to work as a GP and undergraduate clinical facilitator at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, winning the Royal College of General Practitioners ‘Best GP Teacher of the Year’– for focusing teaching on Mental Wellbeing in 2019. By this time I had become very interested in psychological trauma, exploring how this manifests in physical symptoms and medically unexplained symptoms as well as looking at the impact on healthcare professionals. I passed Master of Science (MSc) in Psychological Trauma with Distinction in 2020 from Chester University, with my research focusing on Secondary Traumatic Stress in General Practice.

Over the past few years I have been exploring lifestyle medicine, attending the first Prescribing Lifestyle Medicine Course for healthcare professionals run by Dr Rangan Chatterjee in January 2018. I wanted to explore this further and this year I have completed the Applied Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP) with the Institute in Functional Medicine (IFM) in May 2021 as well as the IFM Immune Advanced Practice Module in April this year.
